Cypriot wild card Marcos Baghdatis made an emphatic start to his Sony Ericsson Open campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Latvian Ernests Gulbis on Wednesday at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Miami.
The 23-year-old Baghdatis fired seven aces and converted four of six break point opportunities to secure his fourth victory (4-0 record) over Gulbis in 80 minutes. He goes on to face French No. 31 seed Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round.

“I know the guy (Gulbis) doesn't give rhythm,” said Baghdatis. “He's smacking all the balls around. So I just played point per point. [I] just tried to put the ball back as many times as I could. It's not easy playing guys like that. He came with lots of

unforced errors. That's the way I had to play today, so I'm pretty happy I did it good and I won and I'm in the next round.”

Currently ranked No. 105 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings, Baghdatis was restricted to just 12 tournaments in an injury-ridden 2008 season. The former No. 8 (August 21, 2006) has an 11-6 match record in 2009, highlighted by quarter-final showings at Johannesburg (l. to Ferrer) and Delray Beach) and a run to the Australian Open fourth round (l. to Djokovic).

Former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, a wild card entrant in this year’s Sony Ericsson Open, recovered from a one-set deficit to oust Israeli lucky loser Dudi Sela 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday evening in Miami.

In blustery conditions on Stadium, Hewitt lost his serve on five occasions but converted six of 11 break point opportunities on Sela’s serve to seal his second victory over the Israeli (2-0 record) in just under two hours.

The 28-year-old Hewitt has fallen to No. 98 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP rankings after being sidelined for the final four months of 2008 following left hip surgery. The right-hander reached three consecutive semi-finals at the Sony Ericsson Open in 2000 (l. to Sampras), 2001 (l. to Gambill) and 2002 (l. to Federer). The two-time Grand Slam champion is approaching his 500th tour-level match win (494-168 record) and goes on to face No. 7 seed Gilles Simon of France, whom he lost to in their one previous meeting (Marseille 2007).

Spaniard Oscar Hernandez upset Croatian veteran Ivan Ljubicic 6-4, 6-4 to reach the second round.

Four American qualifiers also advanced on Wednesday. Taylor Dent (pictured) broke serve four times as he cruised past Ricardo Mello 6-1, 6-3. The 27-year-old Californian, whose ranking has slipped from a career-high No. 21 (August 8, 2005) to No. 467 due to back injuries in recent years, is making his first main draw appearance since 2005 – when he reached the quarter-finals (l. to Agassi). He next will face Spanish No. 19 seed Nicolas Almagro.

Robert Kendrick defeated Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-3, 7-6(5) to set up a second round meeting with Swedish No. 21 seed Robin Soderling. The 85th-ranked California native reached the third round (l. to Murray) on his Sony Ericsson Open main draw debut in 2007. Kevin Kim progressed when his opponent Michael Llodra retired with groin muscle injury after winning the first set 6-3. World No. 107 Kim will next meet No. 2 Roger Federer. Meanwhile, Michael Russell knocked out Victor Hanescu 7-6(4), 6-3 to set up a challenging second round clash with Gael Monfils – the No. 9 seed from France.

However, wild card Brendan Evans could not match his countrymen’s success as he bowed out to Jan Hernych 4-6, 3-6. Hernych will face 15th seed Tommy Robredo in the second round.

Kazakhstan qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin upset former World No. 2 Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-4 to record his first win on the ATP World Tour this season. The 142nd-ranked Kukushkin withstood eight aces and a first serve percentage of 79 per cent from Haas to break serve three times from five opportunities and wrap up victory on his Sony Ericsson main draw debut in 83 minutes. He will take on Russian No. 25 seed Dmitry Tursunov in the second round. The 30-year-old Haas, who was a quarter-finalist in San Jose (l. to Roddick) last month, dropped to a 6-6 match record on the season.

Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic also sprung a surprise as he ousted World No. 36 Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 7-6(2) to set up a second round meeting with No. 3 Novak Djokovic. It is the 24 year old’s first win in an ATP World Tour main draw since reaching the second round at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Canada last July (d. Ancic; l. to Djokovic).

John Isner ATP World No. 47 Sam Querrey led four Americans through to the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Thursday. Querrey knocked out Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-4, 6-3 at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Miami.
The 21-year-old Querrey fired nine aces and converted three of five break point chances to dismiss Muller in front of the Stadium crowd in just 66 minutes. The California native is through to the Sony Ericsson Open second round for a third straight year and next will face Feliciano Lopez, the No. 32 seed from Spain.

Querrey improved to a 12-7 match record on the season. The right-hander reached his second ATP World Tour final in the second week of the season at Auckland (l. to del Potro) and advanced to back-to-back quarterfinals in San Jose (l. to Blake) and Memphis (l. to Roddick).

American qualifier John Isner (pictured) continued his recent good form by defeating Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-4.

The 23-year-old Isner was dominant on serve in his first meeting with World No. 119 Stakhovsky, firing 12 aces and surrendering just seven points behind his first serve in the 74-minute match. The right-hander is through to the Sony Ericsson Open second round for the first time and will face Spanish No. 11 seed David Ferrer.

World No. 134 Isner is coming off a career-best fourth round result in an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Indian Wells last week (d. No. 9 Monfils,. l. to No. 6 del Potro). The towering Tampa resident (6’9’’), who did not drop serve in Thursday’s match (saved one break point), ranked No. 4 in service games won (89%) and No. 7 in aces (156) in the Ricoh ATP Matchfacts coming into the week.

“I'm pretty confident right now. I do have some momentum on my side, so that's helped me here,” said Isner. Looking ahead to his clash with Ferrer he said: “The guy is tough. He makes a lot of balls, and he's in unbelievable shape. He's like a bulldog out there, real feisty and doesn't give anything up. I'm going to have to beat him, that's for sure. He's not going to beat himself. Hopefully I can go in there with a good game plan. Like I said, I am confident. I'm going to need to serve well and return well and hit some big groundstrokes and kind of throw off his rhythm a little bit.”

A second American qualifier also advanced as Amer Delic fired 17 aces to edge past Belgian Steve Darcis 6-4, 7-6(2) in 83 minutes. It was the third tour-level main draw victory (3-2 record) of the season for World No. 130 Delic, who reached the third round at the Australian Open (l. to Djokovic) in January. He next will meet Marin Cilic, the No. 17 seed from Croatia and two-time ATP World Tour titlist this season, as he looks for a repeat of his 2007 Sony Ericsson Open success – when he defeated World No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko to reach the fourth round.

With Frederico Gil’s 7-6(7), 6-2 victory over Mischa Zverev and Benjamin Becker’s 6-4, 6-3 win against Jesse Levine, qualifiers went 4-0 in Thursday’s action – lifting the first round record to a sparkling 10-2, which ties the tournament record set in 1990.

American Bobby Reynolds suffered a bagel first set before fighting back to defeat Juan Ignacio Chela 0-6, 7-5, 6-4 and set up a second round meeting with Czech No. 18 seed Radek Stepanek.

Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili earned a second round clash with World No. 1 Rafael Nadal after battling past Italy’s Simone Bolelli 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The 72nd-ranked Gabashvili also reached the Sony Ericsson Open second round in 2007 (l. to Youzhny).

Gabashvili was joined in the second round by countryman Igor Kunitsyn, who came through a late-night tussle with Argentine Guillermo Canas 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-3 to set up a second round meeting with No. 12 seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile. The 27-year-old Kunitsyn is currently a career-high No. 37 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings and has a 4-7 match record on the season.
